Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do Before Calling for Furnace Repair

October 07, 2015

You can’t bank on the weather in Central Point, but one thing the team at Titan Heating & Air Conditioning wants you to be able to count on is your heating and cooling system. Having a cozy home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you require all year. When your furnace is having trouble you may think that means a furnace repair can be looming on the horizon. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, reliable self recently, there are some things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Titan Heating & Air Conditioning.

Check the Thermostat

We have received calls where we simply had to switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While changing the thermostat for the season, it’s easy for a homeowner to forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you would like it to do.

One thing to look over while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. Almost all digital thermostats have a low battery warning, but if it’s been some time since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a switch. It’s another easy fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of problems. Not only will a dirty filter cripple your system’s efficiency and stifle air flow, it could also cause a sudden breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is effortless and it can play a major role in keeping your system operating at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to look at is the breaker for your furnace. Sometimes a problem can be as simple as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A common misconception is that a homeowner should seal the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair down the line. Closed vents create higher pressure within your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.
